The former Hindmarsh Square Conregational Church -"Hindmarsh Square Church - Sixty Years Of Its History - The diamond jubilee celebration in connection with the Hindarsh Square Congregational Church began with the services on Sunday, September 24. The present building has not been up for 60 years, but the congregation dates its history from 1851, in which year Mr (afterwards the Hon.) W Peacock and Mr I J Barclay quitted the fellowship of the old Freeman Street Chapel, in which the Rev T Quinton Stow - the first Congregational preacher in South Australia - exercised his ministry. Mr Peacock who owned a large property on the site of the present New Market, near East Terrace, built at his own expense on part of his ground close to Rundle street a place of worship, which he named Ebenezer Chapel. That edifice was opened for worship in June, 1851, and for a time the Rev M H Hodge, of Port Adelaide, and the Rev George Stonehouse, of the Lefevre Terrace Baptist Church, North Adelaide, helped in the conduct of services....When the rush to the Victorian goldfields occured in the early fifties...Ebenenezer Chapel was closed for 15 months....In July 1853, ...the church began with a roll of 20 members....
