The first Anglican services in Colac began about 1864.

The first Anglican church building was opened on 8/5/1870 by Rev Astley Cooper of St Paul's Geelong. It was consecrated on 18/4/1882 by Dr Moorehouse, Bishop of Melbourne. The church was dedicated to St John the Evangelist.

The foundation stone for the present building was laid on 18/7/1889 by Mr J R Hopkins of Winchelsea and opened on 24/6/1991 by Dr Thornton, Bishop of Ballarat. 'As the date corresponded to the nativity of St John the Baptist, and as the old church had been dedicated to St John the Evangelist, the Bishop deemed it most fitting to combine the two into the dedication of the new church". (p11 St John's Church of England - Colac - Diamond Jubilee 1870-1930 by Isaac Hebb).

More historical information/photographs of the church/congregation are invited. Photographs uploaded 15/1/2018.
