A plaque of the Finbarr story records: St Finnbarr was born in Ireland in the sixth century. He was Cork's first Bishop. The city of Cork grew up around the monastery which Finnbarr founded. He is now the city's patron. Finnbarr was baptised 'Lochan' but was called 'Fionnbharr', whitehead, because of his fair hair. The name 'Barry' is derived from Finnbarr. The St Finbarr's Catholic Church, Quilpie is in the Parish of Quilpie and the Diocese of Toowoomba. The present church building was opened on 9/11/1976 by the Bishop of Toowoomba, and replaced an earlier wooden structure.
